Learn to Research the History of your House

House History Workshop, Tuesday, 20 May 2014, 6:00-8:30 p.m.

Morris-Butler House, 1204 Park Avenue

Sponsored by Historic Urban Neighborhoods of Indianapolis (HUNI)

Have you ever wondered who lived in your house in years past? Do you wish your walls could talk? This free workshop will guide participants through the steps to research their historic home or building. Learn how to use resources such as city directories, maps, deeds, building permits, photographs, online genealogy sites, and newspapers to determine when your house was built and who lived there.

Historian and archivist Joan Hostetler, owner of Heritage Photo and Research Services, will illustrate the free program with photographs and examples primarily from downtown Indianapolis neighborhoods. Attendees may email your home’s address in advance for possible inclusion in the presentation.

After the 1.5 hour presentation, stay for refreshments and visit expert stations where experienced researchers Deedee Davis, Sharon Butsch Freeland, Jordan Ryan, and Bill Selm, will demonstrate the use of resources such as Sanborn maps, genealogy records, newspapers, city directories, and deeds.

Seating is limited to 40 and registration is required. For more information contact heritagephotoservices@gmail.com or (317) 771-4129.
