East 10th Street Tactical Urbanism Safety Project

April 18 @ 9:00 am 3:00 pm

Overview

Join us for a community Tactical Urbanism project on East 10th Street in front of Harshman Middle School and Theodore Potter Elementary.

To increase safety on 10th Street for walkers, cyclers, and cars, we are installing a temporary street art project on East 10th Street across from Harshman and Potter schools. The project area is from Newman Ave to Oriental Ave.

The project will be in place from April-October. We will be installing bump outs with bollards and paint around the 2 crosswalks across from the school. We will also be adding some additional structures along 10th Street in order to road diet and encourage slower and safer driving. The project plan will be shared once the final project is approved by DPW.

We will be collecting data before and after the project to evaluate whether a permanent solution makes sense in this area. If we show positive changes in days with this project, we will petition DPW and the City of Indianapolis to make permanent infrastructure changes in this area.

We need school and community volunteers to clean and prepare the streets for painting, divert traffic, place bollards, and assist the artist with sketching and painting the design on the roadway. We will provide safety vests and all tools and supplies needed. We will provide instructions, no experience is necessary.

Free parking is available right next to Theodore Potter Elementary School and Harshman Middle School. There is additional parking behind Harshman. This parking can be accessed from 10th Street or Oriental Ave. There will be restrooms and water available in Harshman Middle School for volunteers.

This event is led by the Harshman Family Student Teacher Association and made possible through a grant from Safe Routes to School, administered by Health by Design.
